The Task Risk Spectrum
Every dot is a real work task from a real job. We scored 1,000 individual tasks across 495 occupations for AI automation risk.
Key finding: Routine cognitive tasks (data entry, filing, calculating) average 80% risk — nearly all automatable today. Non-routine manual tasks (surgery, repairs, physical care) average just 13% risk. Your job isn't one risk number — it's a mix of tasks, some safe, some not. Methodology
Tasks come from the O*NET database — the U.S. Department of Labor's detailed taxonomy of what workers actually do. Each task is scored for AI capability (can current AI do this?) and weighted by importance and time spent.
Task categories follow the economic literature on routine vs. non-routine work (Autor, Levy, Murnane 2003). Routine cognitive tasks are most automatable; non-routine manual and interpersonal tasks remain hardest for AI.
